The official opening of the Year of Indigenous Languages was announced by the head of the Federal Agency for Ethnicities Igor Barinov during his speech at a press conference at UNESCO. The United Nations General Assembly declared 2019 the International Year of Indigenous Languages. It is aimed at drawing global attention to the critical risks which threaten indigenous languages, raising the importance of languages for the sustainable development, reconciliation, good governance and peace-building.
Igor Barinov initiated the holding the year of indigenous languages of Russia. Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District responded to this proposal, and in addition, is ready to become the main venue for thematic events.
“The plan for holding the year of indigenous languages includes more than 700 events, which will take place on the federal and regional levels. The official opening of the year of indigenous languages will take place in the framework of the international forum in Yugra in March,” said Igor Barinov.
The opening of the year of indigenous languages of Russia will take place in the framework of the international forum which will take place in Khanty-Mansiysks on March 21-22. The delegates of 35 Russian regions where indigenous minorities live, representatives of the scientific and educational communities, public associations, authorities and others will attend this forum.
The Agency notes that during a working visit to Khanty-Mansiysk in October 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin gave Yugra as a vivid example of a city of an ethnic harmony, unique traditions, culture and customs of indigenous ethnicities.SURGUTINTERNEWS
